Description
The primary fuel for prolonged, intense endurance exercise is carbohydrate and so the amount of carbohydrate stored in the body is one of the main determinants of performance. As such, it is important that carbohydrate stores are maximised prior to endurance exercise and that during prolonged exercise where these stores will be depleted, additional carbohydrate will be consumed to maintain performance and prevent fatigue. Carbohydrate consumption will help maintain blood glucose and replenish muscle glycogen. If carbohydrate is not consumed, muscle glycogen will be depleted after approx. 90 minutes of exercise and severe fatigue will set in. The amount of carbohydrate you should take during exercise will depend on the duration of your training or competition.
- Exercises <1h: no need to consume carbohydrates during exercise.
- Exercises 1-2h: 30g of carbohydrates per hour of exercise (~1 energy gel)
- Exercises 2-3h: 60 g of carbohydrates per hour of exercise (~ 2 energy gels)

Etixx Isotonic Energy Gel is a unique sugar blend consisting of fast acting sugars (glucose and maltose), semi-slow acting sugars (sucrose) and slow acting sugars (complex sugars). This is what is meant by “Triple Action Effect” (triple acting sugars) which provide fast energy and at the same time provide sustained energy over a long period of time (see figure). In addition, glucose and fructose use different transport systems when absorbed into the body. This means that in total more carbohydrates can simultaneously enter the bloodstream when glucose and fructose are consumed together compared to when only one of the two sugars is consumed. The energy gel is a highly concentrated sugar form, which means large amounts of fuel. To get the same amount of carbohydrates in an energy drink you would have to drink large amounts of liquid which would increase the likelihood of gastrointestinal distress/upset. It also contains no added nutrients such as protein or fat which can slow down stomach emptying (digestion). Etixx Isotonic Energy Gel is ideal for endurance sports and also strength training in hot climates and for athletes with high sweat rates. It also contains electrolytes and citrates. Electrolytes (sodium and potassium) are added to replace those lost through sweating. The sodium intake also helps to ensure that moisture is better retained in the body and stimulates thirst. This gel is isotonic (6.9% carbohydrates per 100 ml) when dissolved in 350 ml of water and this leads to optimal absorption of fluids, carbohydrates and minerals. This gel can be consumed with or without water and is therefore ideal to take with you on training sessions when it can be difficult to take the necessary supplies.
