Carbon-Fibre Nylon (PAHT CF15): Why a 3D-Printed Hand Guard Withstands What Plastic Breaks

What PAHT CF15 Nylon is, why a 3D-printed, carbon-fibre-reinforced high-temperature nylon withstands enduro and downhill impacts where stock plastic breaks, and how that translates into a 120 g modular hand guard with a lifetime warranty.
Carbon-Fibre Nylon (PAHT CF15): Why a 3D-Printed Hand Guard Withstands What Plastic Breaks

The material matters more than the shape

A hand guard can have the perfect silhouette and still snap at the first serious impact. What decides whether a part survives a branch at full speed, a rebound off a rock or a silly fall isn't just its design: it's what it's made of and how it's made. And that's where most stock hand guards —conventional injection-moulded plastic— fall short.

At CarboXtrem we make our Hand Guard for Enduro, Downhill and MTB from a very specific material: PAHT CF15 Nylon, 3D printed. It isn't just any plastic, and in this article we explain exactly what each letter of that name means and why it translates into a part that weighs 120 grams a pair and comes with a lifetime warranty.

What is PAHT CF15 Nylon?

The name looks like a code, but each part describes a real property of the material:

  • PA — Polyamide, what we commonly call nylon. A family of technical polymers known for their toughness and their ability to absorb impacts without fracturing cleanly, unlike rigid, brittle plastics.
  • HT — High Temperature. It's a nylon formulated to keep its mechanical properties at temperatures at which an ordinary plastic would start to soften or deform. That matters when the part spends hours in the sun, near a hot brake disc or inside a bike bag in the middle of summer.
  • CF15 — Reinforced with 15% chopped carbon fibre. Those fibres, embedded in the nylon matrix, multiply the structural stiffness and dimensional stability of the whole. The result is a part that flexes just enough to absorb energy, but doesn't "open up" or give way under load.

It's essentially an aerospace-grade nylon: the kind of material used in technical components that need impact resistance and stiffness at the same time, without the weight of metal.

Why reinforced nylon beats stock plastic

The key difference is how each material fails. A cheap, rigid plastic tends to fail in a brittle way: it holds until, suddenly, it breaks and shatters. Nylon, on the other hand, is a tough polymer: it absorbs the impact energy by deforming slightly and recovering, instead of splintering. For a part whose job is literally to take hits, that's exactly the property you want.

The carbon fibre reinforcement adds what pure nylon lacks: stiffness. Without it, a nylon part could be too flexible and "soft". With 15% fibre, you get a balance that's hard to match: toughness to take the impact + stiffness to keep its shape and really protect. It's the combination that separates a hand guard that does the job from one that lasts season after season.

Lightness you notice on the handlebar

All this comes with very little weight: the complete set is around 120 grams. In an area as sensitive as the ends of the handlebar —where weight directly affects handling feel and rotational weight— every extra gram is noticeable. A heavy guard dulls the steering; a 120 g one protects without you hardly knowing it's there.

3D printing: why it isn't the same as moulding

A good material is half the equation. The other half is how it's shaped. We 3D print every guard, and that isn't a technological whim: it gives us concrete advantages.

  • Optimised geometry: we can put material where the impact demands it and remove it where it adds nothing, something impossible with an injection mould that forces uniform wall thicknesses.
  • Custom internal reinforcements: internal structures and ribs that increase strength without adding weight.
  • Real customisation: each unit is adjusted to your bike and your hand. Sizing is fine-tuned with you (we guide you on WhatsApp), instead of a "one size fits all" that almost never fits properly.
  • No expensive tooling: we don't depend on moulds costing tens of thousands of euros, so we can make short runs and truly made-to-measure products.

It's the same philosophy we apply across our whole range: choosing, for each part, the technology and material that best do its job. If you're interested in the contrast between hand-laid carbon and 3D printing, we cover it in our article on when we use each technology.

The detail you can't see: the inner face

If you turn the guard over, you'll find the most important part: an anti-slip inner surface with an X pattern. It isn't decorative. That texture does two jobs at once:

  • It absorbs and spreads the impact where it contacts your hand and the handlebar, instead of passing it on as a hard knock.
  • It grips, stopping the part —or your hand— from slipping when you're riding in the rain or covered in mud, exactly when you need the most control.

On the outside, a carbon fibre look finish; on the inside, engineering designed for the worst moment of the descent.

Modular mounting and compatibility

The guard uses a modular mounting system designed to adapt to a wide range of handlebar and lever setups —compatible with more than 250 bike models—. Installation is quick and secure, and because it's made to measure we make sure it fits your specific cockpit instead of forcing a universal solution.

Who is it for?

For the enduro, downhill or trail rider who rides technical, wooded terrain, where branches, rocks and crashes are part of the day. If you've already taken a knock on your fingers or levers, you know why a good hand guard stops being an extra and becomes essential. And if you want to dig deeper into how to choose one, see our complete guide to hand guards for enduro and downhill.

Frequently asked questions

What is PAHT CF15 Nylon?

A high-temperature nylon (polyamide) reinforced with 15% carbon fibre. It combines the toughness of nylon —which absorbs impacts without fracturing cleanly— with the stiffness of carbon fibre. It's a technical/aerospace-grade material.

Why is it better than a conventional plastic guard?

Cheap rigid plastic fails in a brittle way: it holds until it suddenly breaks. Reinforced nylon absorbs the energy by deforming and recovering, and the carbon fibre keeps its shape. It withstands what stock plastic breaks.

How much does it weigh?

The complete set is around 120 grams, very little for a part mounted at the ends of the handlebar.

Is it compatible with my bike?

A modular mounting system compatible with more than 250 models, and each unit is made to measure. We help you with sizing on WhatsApp.

Which disciplines is it designed for?

Enduro, downhill (DH) and MTB, especially on technical, wooded terrain with a risk of impacts.

Protect what you use most: your hands

If you ride terrain where branches and rocks go looking for your fingers, a 3D-printed PAHT CF15 Nylon hand guard is the difference between carrying on riding and heading home early. Light, stiff, tough and made to measure.
